How To Keep Brothers And Sisters Feeling Accepted In Our Church.

No one can deny the fact that nowadays many people hop from one church to another. As true believers of Jesus Christ we shouldn’t blame anyone, for this particular problem because we do not know why they keep doing so. Of course not all of those who are church hopping have the same problem. But as a church member we need to think positively and pray about this matter. This is so that we can do something for them; in order to keep them feeling at home in our church. This is especially important to those who are new to our church - that they really feel accepted in our church.

After listening to a sermon preached by two brothers in our church last month in two different services, I began to remind myself, “Do I make each member feel accepted in the church?” Actually it is my responsibilities to make every member feel at home or accepted in the church, particularly the visitors. So based on their sermon I have listed four steps which we can use or do in order to keep our brothers and sisters feeling accepted in our church.

First, pray for them constantly without ceasing. [Colossians 4:5-6 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.] Grasp every opportunity to pray for them, by asking them why they are here. Once we know them personally, we can for pray for them. Prayer is the best tool for every one of us to use in order to show our concern for them. Why do I say this? Because just recently two sisters from Singapore happened to be in our church, and I took that opportunity to pray for them because they were flying back to Singapore that afternoon. I never expected anything to happen after praying for them. But one week later I received a letter from them. In their letter they said that they were very much encouraged by my prayer.

Brothers and sisters you can do it as well, not just for the visitors but for our fellow members, pray for them continually. Prayer only requires our faith in Jesus Christ [Matthew 7:7-12 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!]. Our prayer has the power to move God’s spirit to work [James 5:16 the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.]. Our prayer is like a boat, sending someone across the river. It’s also like an ambulance sending someone to hospital. The most important thing is our heart, whether we are willing to spend some time praying for others or not.

Remember, in order to experience God’s power in our church ministry we need to sacrifice three things in our life. The first is our time; second is our energy and third is our possessions. Jesus said to His disciples “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” [Mark 8:34-36 ]. Are you prepared to sacrifice three areas in your life today?

Secondly, visit them regularly by going to their houses or offices. We also can visit them through other means, without our physical presence. This can be done through our hand phone [SMS or call], cards, through our daily prayer or through e-mail. The Apostle Paul said to the Colossian church, “though I am not present physically but my spirit is always with you”. Therefore it is not necessary for us to visit our brothers and sisters through our physical presence but visit them through other means. Above all we need to take note that it is our action that is important. See [Colossians 4:5-6 ] “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone”.

Remember brothers and sisters that visiting our fellow family in Christ today is not difficult because we have plenty of means available for use. It does not require a lot of our time but more action. Now I have this question for you - How often do you visit your fellow friends in Christ who do not regularly come to our church? Take action before something else happens.

Thirdly, inviting them on special occasions, for example; birthday parties, Chinese New Year, Gawai or Christmas celebrations. Make them feel important in our gatherings by introducing them to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. See in [1 Peter 4:8-10 ] “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms”.

Actually I am not good in helping others who are facing problems because of my many limitations but I try my best to do something for God in helping others. I need to remind myself that my motive must be right because if it is not those who receive my help will not feel anything. Once my motive is right I believe those being helped will experience God’s Love.

Fourthly, offer our care voluntarily to them, physically and spiritually. I still remember in my first month at TMC, a brother came to me and said, pastor if you have any need just tell me. His words really made me feel at home and accepted. Let us look at Jesus’ example when he sees the Samaritan woman coming to draw water in the well. He came nearer and asked for water. [John 4 ]. Many times we are waiting for others to come to us. As I ponder upon this event, it makes me remember the words said by my friend. He said, “Brother if you want to eat fish, you need go to the river for it”. What he meant is that no fish will jump out of the river into our pot by itself. Likewise in Church, in order to make a person feel accepted we need to come up to them and make ourselves available to them. Talk to them. Show our interest in them, that we accept them. The Bible says very clearly that we need to bear one an others burden. See [Galatians 6:2 ] “Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ”.

Finally, brothers and sisters in Christ let us make our fellow brothers and sisters who are new to our church feel accepted because they need our care. Although it is difficult for us to do because we are not used to it, do something. Let us try do something for our God in our church, by praying and by offering our help to those who are new in our midst. Each one of us comes to church every Sunday; surely you are expecting something from God. As a mature Christian, what do you do with those who are new to our church? Bear in mind brothers and sisters this project is not a one minute project but it takes time and must continue, day after day.

To end, brothers and sisters remember this Bible verse as we serve the Lord in our Church “Do everything without complaining or arguing” [Phi 2:14.] And then our service can bring blessings to others. The Bible says every help and care which we offer to our brothers and sisters are not in vain, if we do it sincerely and honestly. Because of our love for God, He can change things. See [Peter 4:8-9] which says “above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling”. Each one of us is qualified to serve Him and can be used by Him to do great things.

Build up the confidence of others in us.

In God’s ministry, to make others obey and trust our word, we need to prove ourselves first through our actions. It is impossible for someone to trust us if they don’t see trustworthiness in our personal life. Remember brothers and sisters, we must build up the confidence of others in us first. It is not an easy task but we have to do it. There is no escape from it. This process mainly focuses on “building people’s trust”. The people around us will only believe, follow and obey what we say if they see trustworthiness thoroughly in our personal lives. In other words, we have to walk our talk.

What are the steps that we can use in order to build up their confidence in us?

First, we must walk the talk. Whatever we have said, needs to be proven through our actions, because the people around us can only believe what we say if they see it in our daily lives. Jesus is a very good example. He not only taught people to pray earnestly but He himself first did it. See Mark 1:35 “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed”. Because His lifestyle spoke it first therefore indirectly He was able to influence many people around Him with His teachings. The Bible tells us also that in Him no sin was found [Hebrew 7:26] “Such a high priest meets our need--one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens”. Jesus reminded His disciples to live not like the Pharisees who were too concerned about outward or worldly things than inward or spiritual wellness.

Many people can speak very well but are no good when it comes to doing. Remember each one of us has his own strength or gifts in certain areas. The most important for us to hold on to as a follower of Christ is “to put everything in action”. Of course our performance sometimes does not fulfill the expectation of our listeners because of our limitations. “Be courageous and don’t stop - please press on”. The people around us may be too concerned about our performance and forget to look to God rather than their own hearts. 1 Samuel 16:7 “But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

Secondly, we speak from our own life. The truth must be seen or demonstrated in our lives first before we teach others. For example “prayer” encourages people to pray continually without ceasing. But when we have our meals or drinks and we don’t even pray first before we take it. How can we ask others to prayer first if we do not set the example first? 1 John 3:18 says “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth”. We may say a lot of things about ourselves to others. I do this and that. Have you noticed that we can only see certain parts of our bodies and much of it we can’t see? In the same way people cannot fully evaluate whether we really are this type of a person or not. My encouragement to all of us is “to humble ourselves by allowing God’s Spirit to take control of all our lives”.

Still very fresh in my heart is a sharing by a new believer on how he became Jesus’ disciple. He said, “frankly speaking I became a Christian not because of the beautiful Church building, or the good music performed in the church but I became a Christian because of the Christian lifestyle [love, care] they show. So now we need to bear in our minds that our actions speak louder than our words. The Bible says to us in Hebrew 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith”. This particular passage urges all of us to keep ourselves pure and righteous before Him because we are surrounded by many witnesses.

Thirdly, we must live differently from the world. What I mean here is we are to thoroughly keep ourselves different from the unbeliever’s actions. We don’t do what they do, for example: go buy 4D; tell lies or consult mediums and so on. In Psalms 1:1-2 the writer urges us to get rid of? “Do not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night”. This is not just mentioned in the Old Testament but in the New Testament as well. Apostle Paul urges the Roman Church to live differently than this world. See Roman 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will”.

One of India’s most prominent prime ministers said when he was asked to comment on Christianity in Europe that he admits Jesus is a good man but on Christianity he says, “No”. Why did he say this? Was it because he saw that the Christian life wasn’t different from that of the unbelievers?

Bear in your minds, brothers and sisters in Christ that we are called by God to please Him and not to please men. Whether the people around us listen to us or not that is not our business. Our business is to do His Will. See in John 4:34 Jesus said "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work”. So we need to put aside what people around us may say about us. Cling on to God’s words for us. We must acknowledge that not everyone likes us but Jesus, without doubt, loves us. See in Roman 8:37-39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”. So be courageous, no matter what the people around may say about us. Don’t give up! Think about God’s words for us.

How Can Unity Be Strengthened In Our Church.

According to the Bible, those who have accepted Christ as their Lord and Saviour are a family [John 1:12 ]. No matter who they are or where they come from, all of us are one in Christ. One of Jesus’ prayers in John 17:20-23 is for all those who have become His disciples to live in unity. Jesus says “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me”. Our Jesus’ desire for all of us as believers is to live in unity. Firstly, because He and the Father are one and secondly that the world shall know we belong to Him. The question now is how we keep this unity strong among us today despite the differences in our actions, characters and thoughts.

How do we strengthen unity in our Church today? Unity blossoms when church members have solid relationship with God as well as the people around them. This will also show the world that we belong to the living God.

Firstly, uphold one another in Christ through our daily PRAYER. If we continue to pray for one another everyday, I believe our relationship with each other can be strengthened. Prayer is an unlimited weapon, we can do it anytime, any place and every day. It’s not limited, it’s up to us; each one of us is qualified. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:18-20 “to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints”. In the following verses Apostle Paul asks the Ephesians church to pray for him, “that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should”. Although people do not see us praying for them, the Bible gives us a very good example of how prayer works in the lives of believers. See in Exodus 17:11-13 “As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up--one on one side, one on the other--so that his hands remained steady till sunset. SoJoshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword”.

Our prayer has the power to move God’s Spirit to work. See James 5: 16b which says “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective”. If our prayer is powerful and effective what is your reaction? Come together by praying for one another. Through prayer I believe the unity among us can be strengthened because the Bible says our prayer has power.

Secondly, uphold one another in Christ through GOD’S WORD and our Worship. Besides our Lord Jesus Christ’s example, Apostle Paul also provides us another good example to follow, see in Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God”. In the Bible there is one very well known parable about two kinds of builders. One of the buildings was built on the sand and the other on rock. When the rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against both houses; the house which was built on the sand fell with a great crash but the one built on rock did not fall. [Mathew 7:24-27]. Maybe you have questions in your heart about how to build or uphold one another through God’s Word and in your worship? Remember brothers and sisters nowadays we have so much advanced technology available to us to use to help others grow in their faith. With God’s Word and our worship we can strengthen the unity among ourselves. Did you know that the parable in Mathew 7:24-27 is telling us about the power of God’s Word, if we build our lives upon it? See verse 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock”. So let us uphold one another in Christ through SMS-ing or E-mailing God’s word to one another. Through God’s Word our unity in Church will be kept strong.

By keeping doing this our brothers and sisters in church can be united and feel accepted and important to the church. In other words “there is someone who cares for him or her” and they will not feel out of place in our Church.

Thirdly, uphold one another in Christ through GOD’S LOVE and our CARE. To speak about love is not difficult but to put it into practice really needs sacrifice. Why I say this is because we need to sacrifice a lot of things in our life particularly our time, our energy and our possessions. To love means to care for others. We cannot take good care of others if we do not have God’s love in our hearts first. That is why a “Christian’s care” is very different to that of other religions. Our care and love is Jesus Christ centered, is not lip service alone, but in our actions.

To make the unity in our Church continue to grow stronger, we need to love one another by caring for each other. See Colossians 3:13-14 “Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity”. It is impossible for us to influence non-believers if our lives are not based on God’s love. Remember God’s love will enable us to care for others and most important of all, keep our unity strong.

Fourthly, uphold one another in Christ through our PRESENCE. If we refer to Philippians 2:19-20 , Apostle Paul reveals to us the power of our presence to someone who is in need. Especially when a person is in sickness, loneliness and rejected by others, it does really give them peace of mind. [Philippians 2:19-20 ] “I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare”. I hear comments from many people saying “the presence of the person is more important than the giving”.

Remember brothers and sisters it is needless to say that our presence is more important than our giving. The most important thing to those who are sick or struggling in life is our presence. In church ministries, our presence is most important, to show our support. Therefore let us make ourselves available to anyone who is in difficulty, sadness and other situations.

To conclude, I want to share Psalm 133:1-3 , a song of ascents from David. “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! 2It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes. 3It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore”.

It is true that unity in Christ can be achieved if we focus our eye on our Loving God alone, Jesus Christ. Be bold to change our mind-set by allowing the Holy Spirit to guide and lead us. In other words put aside all of our differences and accept one another as Jesus accepts us.
